Chinese court uses virtual reality technology to restore crime scene

In the world's first precedent, a court in China used virtual reality technology in its own room to represent a criminal offense.

In a murder in September 2017, the 30-year-old killer, Zhang, stabbed his ex-girlfriend Liu, 19, to death. After his crime, Zhang remained in the crime scene until the police arrived.

According to the case, the only witness to the murder was Dong, a colleague of the victim, who attended the court to testify, becoming the first person in China to use virtual reality technology to re-represent the crime.

In the courtroom, the prosecutor asked Dong to wear the virtual reality glasses and begin simulating what he saw during the murder, and to portray three-dimensional images and videos directly on a large screen in front of judges and lawyers inside the courtroom.

"Virtual Reality technology can provide evidence in a more direct and transparent way, and the visual system can effectively help investigators and judges improve efficiency, strengthen the strength of evidence, and visualize testimony in the courtroom," said Zhuang Wei, an officer in the Beijing Municipal People's Office.

A Chinese doctor has successfully performed the first operation of its kind in the country thousands of miles away using virtual reality technology and 3D imaging, which also enabled him to participate in the process and is in place without the need to move from one place to another.
